- What makes your small kitchen so cool?
- The gut renovation resulted in a 50% increase of cabinet space from 35 to 53 cu. ft ., includes a pull out for garbage & recycling and the addition of a drawer dishwasher. And check out the backsplash!
- Describe a challenge you've overcome or a smart resource you've found for your kitchen.
- At 35 square feet, the Kitchen is 10% of my 350 sq ft apartment. The original 48 year old Kitchen was inefficient for modern living, lacked usable counter space and was short on cabinet storage. My biggest challenge was to overcome the mental hurdle of replacing the stove with a cooktop and convection microwave (rather than a stove). Doing so enabled me to make room for a drawer dishwasher (where the oven would have been) plus a 30” wide x 12” tall drawer underneath. I can't live for resale value and what a future unknown buyer might want. My life needs a dishwasher more than it needs a traditional oven.
- What's your favorite meal to cook here?
- Any meals prepared for guests because they were hard to do in my old kitchen. I even bought a Dutch oven.

Beautiful! I love the detail of the corner curve in your countertop. And you chose lovely cabinets that go to the ceiling, so no space is wasted.
Great choice on getting a dishwasher instead of an oven. It fits perfectly in the space!
Wow, I thought it was nice...then I saw the "before" pic. WOW! What an improvement. Great job!
This is wonderful! I'm looking for a good drawer dishwasher and gas stovetop- where did you get yours? What brand and make are they?
Absolutely perfect! Glad you ditched the resale voice in your head and created a kitchen for YOU.
Fabulous use of space and great colour palette. Also happy that you put in what *you* need. Great job!
Thank you for your comments!
Chita Chita - The appliances were purchased from P.C. Richard & Son and are:
Dishwasher - Fisher & Paykel DD24SI6V2
Cooktop - Bertazonni P24-4-00-X
Microwave convection oven - Bosch HMV-8051-U
Refrigerator - LG LRBP1031T
It is fab!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, what an amazing improvement! I think any future buyer would be really impressed with what you've done!
So elegant and very sensible appliance choices. A future buyer could just buy a countertop toaster oven if the convection microwave isn't enough for them. Great job!
I love everything about it! Clean, great colors and that backsplash is the bomb.
I love the bubbles!
Very nice job! Clean, minimal, smart and efficient...great use of space!
Alvin, your space is sleek and efficient. Your remodel might actually INCREASE the resale value from the perspective of a Manhattan buyer who orders delivery more than cooking but also dreads a pile of dirty dishes. (But I live in Brooklyn and like to cook, so that's only conjecture...)
Finally a really small kitchen! I love what you've done with the space. My kitchen is also 35 square feet and I've been considering replacing my oven with a microwave / convection oven and a cooktop too. Do you know if you would have been able to put a regular 18 inch dishwasher underneath the cooktop or was the dishwasher drawer the only option?
Superb!! Very chic and yet simple arrangement
amazing use of space and the bubbles are totally ace!!
Hi Libraryspice - The bottom of the cooktop is at the same elevation as the bottom of the countertop so I would have been able to fit an 18" dishwasher underneath.
Thanks for getting back to me Alvin. I can see the advantages of the dishwasher drawer - it lines up more perfectly with the cooktop and you can use the space below it for a storage drawer.
Have you done any baking in the convection oven? I don't think I'd miss an oven at all except that I'd worry that the micro / convection combo might not be large enough to fit a cookie sheet. I mainly use my oven to store pots and pans and bake cookies.
get it kween!
Beautiful!!!!!
Libraryspice - I've noticed that baking times for cakes/brownies and anything thick/heavy are longer than usual. You also can't broil anything. Consider getting a unit where you can shut off the turntable because there's usually a removable middle shelf so you can bake two small-ish trays of cookies at the same time.
OMG! The "before" photo made me stop breathing. This is the cutest 35 sq. ft. of kitchen! Great job Alvin! Wow!
Simple, classy, elegant
simplified gorgeous!!! love the clean lines of everything, including the fixtures.
Great Job Buddy
Tony
Great transformation from the before picture to how it looks now, well done!!
Love the bubble tile!
Very nice kitchen, Alvin. Efficient and clean. Are the cabinets custom or stock?
The cabinets were made-to-order, which falls somewhere in the middle. You can order a "stock" cabinet, but can adjust the size for an upcharge. This is how I was able to change the widths of the upper cabinets to make them all even.
It is BEAUTIFUL! I love your choices for materials and the overall functionality. Great job!
Thanks - I've been lobbying for a drawer dishwasher in our very small space - it eliminates so much countertop clutter.
Hey Alvin! Striking before and after pics!
Nice Job very Impreesive
Job well done very impressive
Beautiful work, Alvin! xo
Looks so neat and cozy!
Impressive!
Style with function... Great use of Space :-)
Awesome!! Great job Alvin, very classy. I love your choice of appliances and the bubble effect in the background.
I think that's the definition of small, cool. Great job.
Wow, what an amazing transformation. The 'before' kitchen looked like a set design from a horror movie. Now it looks light and bubbly. Good job, Alvin!
Before and after pics say it all. Great attention to details and love the bubbles! Awesome job!
I love the color, bubbles, everything!
This is one cool kitchen. The before and after is just amazing. Alvin I love your choice of colours and the way they play off each other. The glass definitely adds a playfulness and lightness to the space. Great job!
Alvin, where did you get the stock cabinets? I'm in NYC as well. Thanks.
Hi jce. I'm sorry it took so long but I haven't looked at this page since the contest. I got the cabinets at the Home Depot on W 23rd Street and they are made by Fabritec. They are the only stock cabinets I could find that were horizontal grain white oak.
