I use a food scale every single day when I'm home. Every single day. In fact, it's usually one of the first things I use in my kitchen each morning, when I measure out my coffee beans for my Chemex. Sure, I could probably at this point estimate what 34 grams of coffee looks like, but I'd rather not take the risk of a less-than-perfect brew.
If you're in the market for a new scale — whether it's for baking, coffee, or everyday cooking — there's a great deal happening on Amazon right now. You can currently get an OXO food scale for $38, whereas it normally costs $50. That means it's 25 percent off right now.
Not only is this a great deal, but this specific OXO food scale is also one of Alton Brown's favorite measuring tools in the kitchen. As he said in a post a couple years ago: "I have a rule in the kitchen: If you can weigh it … weigh it. This is especially true of compressible powders like flour. Not only is this OXO model accurate and precise (there is a difference, but that's a discussion for another time), the digital display pops out for easy positioning and reading."
This food scale from OXO can weigh up to 11 pounds. The display shows you how much left of the 11 pounds you have left, too. The default reading is in pounds and ounces, but it can also be used for grams. The display can be pulled out from the actual scale in case you're looking to weigh something quite large and it takes up too much space.
As of right now, this food scale has been reviewed by 1,111 people and has close to a five-star rating. "I bought this scale years ago, but I still use it EVERY day. Still the best scale of all that I've encountered," says one reviewer. Many of the reviewers note how accurate they have found this scale.
A couple of the negative reviews note that the scale hasn't been great for measuring very small quantities.
