Do you like espresso? And dark chocolate? Together? These are the questions a friend asked before placing a retro-looking wrapped candy in my palm. I unwrapped it, ready to take a bite, when she just about knocked the piece of chocolate out of my hand. You can't just bite into half of Pocket Coffee, for one crucial reason.
Pocket Coffee, made by Italian chocolatier Ferrero (yes, of Ferrero Rocher), is unlike any other coffee-flavored chocolate I've tried. The center of the dark chocolate rectangle is filled with really sweet, and really liquid, espresso. Any biting to be done must be taken care of while the whole thing is in your mouth. Very sweet espresso gushes out of the center of the candy, and complements the crisp dark chocolate like a dream. Delicious! Beyond that little tip, Pocket Coffee is the perfect after dinner treat, especially to have around the house to give to guests.
I find Pocket Coffee in packages of five chocolates in an Italian shop in NYC's Chelsea Market. Since they only sometimes have it, and I've never seen it anywhere else outside of Italy, your best bet for finding it is online.
Have you tried Pocket Coffee?

Yum! I want some!!
It sounds divine! But really, AT, there are better & (due to lower shipping costs) cheaper distributors than the link provided---the link you provided has $10 shipping for a two week wait & muck ups of orders? No wonder they have 29% positive rating.
I'll be looking locally, too. a nice treat to slip in my husband's pocket or savor for mid-afternoon a pick me up!
Thanks for the tip! I noticed this at the counter of my local Italian deli last week and almost picked it up. Next time I definitely will.
Yes! I've had Pocket Coffee. We were visiting my Husband's cousin in Modena and came home with a big package of them. Unfortunately that was 5 years ago and my supply is long gone :( We also came home with Happy Hippo's which my daughter loved. I had forgotten about them until I saw your post. I'll have to order some for my Husband's birthday. Thank you for the memories!!!
I've had that--love it. The same brand also makes "pocket espresso", which I've never seen in the US but is all over Italy. It's this tiny pod, kind of looks like what you see above, except it's plastic and filled with a kind of chocolatey espresso. It comes with a little straw. It's basically a portable little shot of espresso!
These are amazing! I am headed to Italy in a few weeks and will definitely bring some home with me. Thanks for the reminder!!
Living in germany a few years ago, I became addicted to this stuff. I was impressed at how good the coffee was, and it was the perfect pick-me-up. Thanks for rekindling the memory.
I thought the espresso was way too sweet. But I haven't seen one of these in YEARS - I kinda want one now to see if my tastebuds have changed!
Trader Joe's was carrying these under a different name for a while, not sure if they still are.
I love pocket coffees! I used to eat one of these before finals in college, waaaaay back in the early 90s.
