What challenge have you overcome in your kitchen? We were fortunate that when we moved in the appliances had already been updated to stainless steel and the floor had new tile but little else had been touched. The first challenge was the acoustic drop tile ceiling which we replaced ourselves with drywall a little over a year ago. The second challenge we took on was the small renovation, in a small kitchen on an even smaller budget. Continued

...replacing the cabinet door and drawer fronts on the right side (a challenge as the cabinets are original to the home), replacing and adding 4 cabinets on the left side (which added much needed cabinet space), installing butcher block counter tops, an apron front farm sink and a subway tile back splash for all under $1000!
What's the story of your kitchen?
Our home is a 775 sq. ft. 1938 Cape Cod with wonderful bones, but the kitchen was one area we felt (after 3 years of talking ourselves into it!) that we could bring some of the character and charm back to life.
What is your favorite meal to cook here?
My husband is a teacher and an excellent cook so I am fortunate that he gets home earlier than me each day and often greets me with a warm meal. Our favorite foods to cook together though are fresh Italian meals with basil and tomato from the back yard garden (when it is not snowing in Ohio!)

This is my favorite "small cool" kitchen that has been posted so far.
I live in a suburb of Columbus, glad to see cool houses in our area represented!
This is exactly what I want to do with my small galley kitchen, too, right down to the subway tile and butcher block countertops (except in green paint instead of blue). I'm still waffling on the farmhouse sink; just because I don't want to do more plumbing work than I have to.
The ceiling- I'm trying to deal with acoustic tile myself. Did you drywall over it, or pull it down? (I'm scared of asbestos!)
That is very cute! I love both the shelving added to the opening and the cafe curtain made from a the souveneir (sp?) kerchief! Very cutely done and a nice way to bring the charm back to an older home.
I'm a teacher, I live in Columbus, and I love your kitchen! Charming!
Love the open shelf area behind the stove. Makes the space feel so much larger.
