Pick a vehicle — any vehicle! Be it a truck, boat, taxi, plane, or train, a transportation-themed party is always a good idea for a little guy's birthday. Just look at this bash that Megan, the blogger behind Honey We're Home, threw for her son. It's simple, sweet, and totally easy for you to recreate.
Megan kept the party small (just family), which meant she could host it at home and save big bucks. To dress up your space, first consider the color palette you'd like to go with. For this train party, red, yellow, and two shades of blue made sense. (To give another example, a taxi party would probably be yellow and black.)
Megan hung coordinating tissue paper pom-poms from her overhead fan, which — as long as it's not going to be turned on — is a good idea and easier than taping decorations directly onto the ceiling.
Of course the cupcakes and cookies on this dessert table are totally worth pointing out (love those little toppers!), but there are two other key ideas here: the stripes and shredded paper. The striped table runner is cute, but not so kid-centric that it can't be pulled out for another gathering. And the shredded paper stands in where candy would typically be used to fill apothecary jars. Megan added color and whimsy without adding more sugar or any choking hazards for tiny mouths.
One last smart idea: You can make (or order) a cake shaped like your vehicle of choice, or you can just make a simple round one and supplement with toys around the table. This way, the baby of honor gets something to play with and won't feel compelled to make a total mess of the cake.
