Rammed earth is such a beautiful way of building. Thick walls of earth mediate between indoors and out, modulating the temperature and humidity levels. The material is beautiful, too, and solid so it is visible on both the interior and the exterior of a structure. But what about when dealing with this material on a kitchen wall?
Rammed earth is probably not a material you want being exposed to the splashes and stains of kitchen uses. Check out the solution in this house by SIREwall and Terra Firma Builders:
A glass backsplash has been installed over the rammed earth walls in the kitchen. This way, the material is still visible, but it's protected by a clear, easily-cleaned layer of glass.
Above, you see a shot of the exterior of the same home, more clearly showing the beauty of rammed earth construction. What a beautiful natural material to have show through onto the interior of a home, even on the walls of the kitchen! Read more about this kitchen and the entire home at SIREwall.

I think I just died and went to "fantasy home island"... gorgeous!!
I'm still not understanding exactly what rammed earth is! I'll just go google it. It looks nice whatever it is :) Maybe a little too similar to the wood in the first picture though?
My friends have a rammed earth house and they actually don't have a glass backsplash and it's fine. However, they do most (all?) of their prep work on the island counter. The only thing about rammed earth (for them) is that it gets a TON of bugs. Like they need to get all the walls and house sprayed twice a year or they just get out of hand.
