How do you organize your dried herbs and spices? In a drawer? On the wall? We're always so impressed when our readers send in their own organizational accomplishments — but Tyler really wins the award for most awesome (and most nerdy!) approach! Read on for more...
Tyler sent us these photos and told us:
I designed this magnetic spice rack after searching fruitlessly for a creative way to display all my spices. I loved the idea of a magnetic spice rack to go along with my magnetic knife rack, but store bought options were either too boring or too expensive. Then I found some test tube spice rack designs on Instructables. As an engineer and Alton Brown fan, I wanted to stick to the idea of cooking as chemistry. I borrowed a commenter's idea of using taxonomy as a way of organizing spices and ran with it. After a few hours on Wikipedia, I decided to group the herbs and spices by Order and include the Family and Latin and English names on each box.
Two thumbs up, Tyler! That is pretty awesome.

Red-and-Pink-Stripe...

This is sooo cool!
WANT!
Shut up and take my money already!!!!! Seriously, would the OP be interested in selling these?
I bow to your creativity and believe you need to sell these pronto.
WANT!!
Please sell these. If not I'll just have to copy you and try to make one myself!
Hi Faith,
This is Tyler, the reader who submitted this. Thanks for posting my project! Here is a link to my post on Instructables for those who want to make their own if you'd like to include in the body of the post: http://www.instructables.com/id/Magnetic-Periodic-Table-of-Herbs-and-Spices/ . I'm also hoping to start a Kickstarter next month and open a business selling these.
Love this, super creative.
Genius!! Love it, love it, love it.
Love it!
I know I already commented, but I'm still thinking about this. I would definitely be interested in buying something like this (with some design tweaks, but you'll get there). Here's what I'm wondering - is there any way you could make it customizable? I bet I use spices that aren't on there, and vice versa. If I were going to lay out money for a spice storage system then it would really need to fit my needs pretty perfectly. But seriously, this is awesome and I'll look forward to hearing more about it in the future.
kudos! awesome and very clever.
Thank you for this!
I love this!
Thanks for the interest! What I'm thinking about doing is printing each square on a 3x3 fridge magnet and selling 36/48/60 spice kits for distrobution and setting up a website to sell customized sets as well. Then people could also organize them however they wanted. I'm not sure what else to include other than the latin/english names and symbol. I haven't been able to find nutritional info on all the spices or I might include that.
The kits would come without the stainless steel or frame to keep costs down, but I'd like to sell those as accessories. I'm trying to find suppliers right now. I'll keep updates posted here and on Instructables.
Please do!!! Faith, would you mind promoting Tyler's kickstarter? Pretty much everyone at my work is dying to own one of these.
WANT AND NEED, PLEASE.
Yes! That would be great. Can't wait to see how it progresses.
