Is canning one of the new skills you'd like to learn this year? If so, then take a look at this handy visual guide to canning jars from Marisa at Food In Jars.
Marisa explains that a friend asked for a visual guide to the major types and sizes of canning jar. So she put together a post with photos of all the major available canning jars, with some thoughts on the best sources for finding them.
There are of course other glass jars available in other brands and styles, but these jars (all made by one company, it turns out) are the standard jars safe for actual canning.

I personally like the wide mouth canning jars over the regular size. But the visual for the different sizes is super helpful!
Is there a good place to get gallon canning jars? I know they're not safe to use for canning anymore, but they make great storage.
I've seen gallon jars (or half gallon? they were pretty big) at places like Rural King or Farm and Fleet (farm supply or the like). I like using them for storage too!
The largest jar that Ball makes is the half gallon size. If your area stores don't carry them, you can special-order them through Ace Hardware. Have them sent to the store and you won't have to pay shipping.
You can always try going to restaurants and inquiring after 1-gal pickle or kimchee jars-- I've actually found both for sale at my local thrift store, picked up 4 for maybe 30 cents each? They didn't have lids, but usually the 1-gal jars you can order online don't come with lids, either.
