Almost three weeks ago my friend, fellow food writer and mother Jennifer Perillo, lost her husband quite suddenly. Just a week before his death, she and I sat on a sunny lawn with Dixie cups of lemonade, and she told me about how deep and long her love for Mikey runs.
The loss of Mikey is a grand devastation. Most of us can only imagine.
A bunch of folks in the food community are gathering hands, minds and hearts to help Jennie. This post is about how you can help us help her.
You see, one thing I knew long before we ever met in person was how much Jennie loved sharing food with her husband. She tweeted at length about the meals they made as a family, her excusions to the market for ingredients, and their hand-in-hand date nights out.
Now, she needs help. Jennie and Mikey have two beautiful, vibrant daughters, ages 3 and 8. Suddenly a single mother, Jennie faces some huge challenges: the denial of Social Security benefits and health insurance that runs out in weeks, to name just a few.
In response, a bunch of us in the food community are contributing to an online auction, mostly handmade items and experiences from our hearts, to help raise more funds for Jennie and her girls.

Bid on a day of cooking with me as a way to support the Perillo family
To honor the love Jennie has for Mikey and her passion for feeding him, I am giving an afternoon/evening of pure, simple and joyful cooking. We will make a meal from my new book, Good Food to Share with recipes that you can select. I'll kick in the groceries and the wine. Wine pairings will come from my friend and wine gurustress Jennifer Desmond. (I, too, am learning when to call on a friend for help.)
Here's my vision: We'll shop together, then I'll come to your place and fire up your stove. We'll cook, listen to music, and honor Jennie and Mikey by making something truly beautiful for someone you love. Once the meal is under control, I'll scoot quietly out of your way.
Of course, I'll send you a copy of my book (and a set of Post-it flags) ahead of time to get you started. You mark the dishes you like and we'll curate a meal.
Come on, doesn't that sound like good times? It's what Jennie would want.
Bidding starts at $300. To bid, please leave a comment below stating your bid. Let's go in increments of $50, ok?
• Winner needs to be in New York City and claim prize within six months.
• If you’d like to make an anonymous bid, make sure the email address associated with your user name is correct so I can contact you if you are the winner.
• Auction will end on Sunday, August 28, 2011 at 11:59PM EST. I will contact you with details on how to complete the purchase.
Or just donate to the cause.
Don't want to bid? How about $10, $20, $50, $100 for the Perillos? Bloggers without Borders created a fund to help provide financial security to the Perillo family during this difficult time. You may contribute via PayPal by clicking the Bloggers without Borders button below.
Moved by this story but can't give?
Jennie has serious talent. She has a lot to give and I suspect if you follow my work, you will like hers too. Read her blog, In Jennie's Kitchen, follow her on Twitter, and most importantly put all the strength you have out into the universe and send it her way.
You can also join the hundreds who have already made Mikey's favorite peanut butter pie. It will feed your soul's belly, I promise.
Thank you for whatever you can do.
Clicking the button above will take you straight through to PayPal where you can donate to Bloggers without Borders for Jennie.

Elizabeth Apron fro...

You're doing a great thing. My sister made Mikey's favorite peanut butter pie over the weekend. My thoughts are with the Perillo family.
I don't understand how she couldn't be eligible for social security benefits and is losing health insurance (a reminder once again that we need a nationalized healthcare system). Sad story. But your efforts are so lovely and I'm sure will make some lucky winner very happy.
Sara Kate, you are a great friend.
I have very little myself, so I cannot participate in the auction. Instead, I will do what I can: I will make a very small donation as soon as I am able, and I will keep Jennie and the girls in my thoughts. And I will take Mikey's peanut butter pie to our next family gathering and honor him as I pass on the love.
I agree 100% with Kingtiny. How can there NOT be any social security benefits for her daughters...and herself? When did that stop? I'm so glad you are doing something to guide the rest of us in helping her.
Is there a place where readers can see all the auctions going on for Jennie? Great to have them listed all in one place so we could share the link.
@katebayless yes, the link is in the post above. Here it is:

Whoops - read the post too fast. Just saw the link.
this story is heartbreaking. donation sent.
They looked like a happy couple, so much in love and filled with promise. I only wish it didn't have to end that way.Love to all, may you always remember to love someone.
I am sorry she lost her husband. That is horrible.
But her comments on twitter are misleading and to me, a red flag. I won't be participating.
She said she doesn't qualify for social security benefits which implies she'll be getting nothing. Caretaker survivior benefits are small and do have an income cap. But the larger payments go directly to children (via their caregiver) so really, the amount she is "not getting" now is negligble. Her family is receiving assistance to from the prgoram. And she'll still receive his benefits during her actual retirement.
what a lovely idea. you are a good friend and an inspired - and inspiring individual. i am touched by this simple act of friendship and hope that you do well with your auction (if only i lived in New York...)
Ah, I love it. I donated a similar day cooking class, but you described yours so eloquently. Hopefully between the two of us, we can bring new, delicious recipes and learning experiences to folks' kitchens. Lord knows any amount of money that can be raised for Jennie is worth it.
$300 but I might have to bid against myself because I couldn't possibly take up your day for that little, and for such a heartbreaking deserving cause.
I'm in! Check out my listing for 1000 custom designed and printed business cards for $50.00 on Etsy (bluehandmedia.esty.com). The proceeds from the sales will go to Jennie and the girls.

JudiAU,
I agree that survivor benefits for the children are a given, even if she makes too much to currently receive them for herself - but rather than assuming the tweets are misleading, I think we can hope that she was misinformed (even tho the Social Security website is pretty straight foward on this issue.) I see at least one financial planner has offered to do some pro bono work for her - so that should get straightened out quickly.
I bid $350! Would love to spend a day cooking with you, Sara Kate!
To the folks concerned about the social security issue:
I also found this piece about social security benefits and health insurance to be truly unbelievable. However, as a friend of Jennifer's, I know that this is what she's going through right now. There are people trying to clear up the situation, but even if some benefits are found, it's still not enough.
If you have constructive suggestions or help to offer, we'd love to hear that.
In the meantime, no matter what, a suddenly single mother of two definitely needs support or all kinds.
I think its pretty clear that while there are some survivor benefits payable, there are other needs that are not capable of being satisfied, the most significant of which has been identified as health insurance.
I think its inspirational that so many food bloggers have banded together to help this person (and other people, the charitable effort has not been limited to this cause). I think she has said that the benefits received for her kids would cover the mortgage and maintenance. It is likely much less than his income actually contributed to their family unit, so you should not presume that its a 1 to 1 wage replacement. In addition, one should not presume that social security will be available for her at all when she hits age 67.5, and you don't get two monthly payments.
After last nights chat....which was just lovely, I will bid $400.00

I knew for two years that my bf was terminally ill, yet it was still heartbreaking to sit by his ICU bed and tell him it was all right to let go in 2009. I can only imagine how horrific a sudden death must be, especially with two small daughters to care for. I'm stone cold broke, as I still haven't been able to return to a full-time job since bf's death (I was his full-time caretaker), but will contribute in the future when I can, and will keep Jennifer and her girls in my thoughts.
Such a lovely and thoughtful contribution, Sara Kate. I didn't know Jennie personally but her story has definitely touched me deeply. You're an invaluable friend.
What a great cause! I bid $450.
I would love to contribute a watercolor to the auction. I really feel for Jennie - this is too hard to bare alone.

Thank you!
@madampince your story is equally heart-breaking. Even sending some good vibes Jennie's way will make a difference. Be well...
$550!
This meal is for my partner of 20 years. It's our anniversary dinner. She loves to cook. You and her in the kitchen is the best gift I could give.
I'm in at $600.
oh....let the BIDDING begin....Hmmmm
Do I dare wait? !
Rachel
Rachel, don't wait. Jump.
For Jennie and her girls-I pray over time you heal and find joy and love
-for Sara Kate-you are worth the price of this auction and more
-for my love and the joy it is to spend all my remaining days with you
$650
Congratulations, lizwillis6! I just sent you an email. Wondering too if I should take ckweinberg's bid as well....... is that kosher in an auction?!
I think, since it is to help someone, that would be great. If you felt wonky about it, you could ask for 600 from each. I've seen people do this before in charity auctions when the prize is someone's time. Good luck.
Yes....when I donate at auctions, they will invariably ask the donor if they are willing to donate 2 (class/dinner etc) doubling the money!!
