Most birthday parties revolve around a stack of sugar: The birthday cake! What if you want something a little lighter for your fête this year? Why not take an idea from Brittany at Oh Happy Day and throw a fruit party, complete with charming balloon fruit garland?
The idea here is simple: Cut up some ordinary fruit, like apples, oranges, and grapes — and ask your guests to bring something more exotic (think passionfruit, cherimoya, dragonfruit, even durian, if you want to be bold!). Everyone gets to taste something new and something that satisfies their sweet tooth in a healthier way.
And you also have these balloon garlands to amp up the festivities. These are amazingly cute, but not difficult to create: Just blow up balloons and tie them up with paper leaves.

While it's a lovely idea, my sweet tooth would feel a bit put out if I went to a birthday party and left without any cake ;)
A few years ago I bought magic berries (those berries that make sour things sweet; you can get them on Amazon) and a bunch of citrus fruit, plus some interesting veggies, and we all ate the berries and then chewed on lemons and oranges. So much fun!
Agreed with Reems. Birthdays are the one time a year for some to splurge and enjoy themselves. I imagine if this were for kids, most would be mad to find out they are at a party sans cake!
If I were to do this though, I'd get some miracle fruit or tablets to at least make it more fun for everyone.
I love that balloon garland! ...and going with the fruit theme, I would probably do something like a pie or fruit trifle (both of which I like better than cake)
I love this idea and the garland. I think the idea that there is any time or day of the year that one "deserves" or "has to have" some sort pf junk food is a little unsettling. Especially! Since obesity is such an epidemic. Healthy can be fun and satisfying!
as the mother of a child with food sensitivites, i love this idea- you dont have to worry about who is a vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, etc! fresh food is always fun- and i love the idea of giving everyone an opportunity to try new things! love the garland too : )
