Carry-on cocktail kits are not new. In fact, this carry-on cocktail kit isn't even new-new (it's been around for about a year). But it's new to me, and I am very, very excited about it.
I say this as someone who isn't generally excited about carry-on cocktail kits or rainbow sprinkles or flamingos. I am stoic in the face of unicorns. But this tiny dose of fun has me doing a little happy dance.
Why, you might ask? It's a good question. And here is my answer.
In the past few decades, travel has gotten significantly less fun. Did you guys watch that show PanAm? It was not very good, but the point is this: Those people had fun when they flew. The voyage wasn't something that they endured to get to their destination. The voyage was part of the joy of travel.
And this miniature party in a box strikes me as a way to really revel in the getting there. Yes, the being there is great, but I love the idea of bringing some glamour — or at least rainbows and flamingos — back to the friendly skies.
A Guide to Gray Malin's Sprinkle Carry-On Cocktail Kit
Each kit comes with the following:
- An instruction card
- Tonic syrup
- 1/2 ounce jigger
- Bar spoon
- Rainbow sprinkles
- Flamingo stirrer
- Cocktail straw
- Linen napkin
You'll need to supply the mini-booze (they suggest vodka, but I prefer gin), the cup (ask for two: one with ice and one without), a lemon or lime, and some seltzer (all readily available on basically any airplane.)
Run the lemon wedge around the rim of your drinking cup (without ice), then dip the rim in the sprinkles. Next, build your cocktail: Add tonic syrup (using your jigger), spirit, ice, and seltzer to taste and stir. Garnish with your cocktail straw and flamingo stirrer and serve on linen napkin.
I can almost guarantee your seatmate will be jealous.
