Shelby has a strong decorating sense, and her Chicago apartment is a blend of budget DIY solutions and "practical but beautiful" things. I love what she's done with her kitchen, particularly in the empty space above her (otherwise ordinary) range hood: she put a plant there, and wrapped an old tapestry around the planter. Next to the ikat bowls, it fills that wall space wonderfully!
The other striking feature in her kitchen is the large piece of art hanging on the wall, and it has a story, too — it was painted by her grandfather, Frank Girard.
All in all, this kitchen is a great example of how to take a blank-canvas-of-a-kitchen and infuse it with just enough personality to make it interesting without being too overwhelming or overly decorated.
