When you have severe or multiple dietary restrictions, traveling can be frustrating, depressing ... or a lot of fun, especially if you do some advance planning. Here are a few things I've learned from personal experience on the road and in the air.

When we make a gin and tonic in our house, the question inevitably arises: do we use the good gin or the mixing gin? I usually land on the side of mixing gin because the tonic flavor often overpowers the nuance of our more expensive gin. The one thing we rarely consider? The brand or type of tonic we use. Tonic is just tonic, right?
My children are no more or less picky than any children at the table, and we do our best to encourage them to at least try a little of everything, if only to be polite, even if they don't eat a huge serving. On vacation, in foreign surroundings and in the public eye, they're far more likely to taste new dishes without hesitation. Sometimes, a change of scenery is just the thing to expand the palate.
The deep love of a G&T continually proves strong, not just in the summer and most definitely not just stateside — the New York Times called 2013 the Year of the Gin and Tonic and Europeans love this little cocktail just as much as we do. Yet, on a recent trip to Portugal, I found their G&Ts to be quite different than what I was used to sipping. That’s when a local bartender dropped some knowledge on me.

Q: I'm an experienced baker branching out into nut flours and other gluten-free flour baking. When I bake with wheat flour, I use the Ina Garten method (fluff, scoop, level). But with these other flours, I don't know how I'm supposed to measure.
