The Kentucky Derby is this weekend, which means there is an excuse for lots of frilly hats, fancy sandwiches, and mint juleps. The classic mint julep is easy, refreshing, and a staple for a reason, but sometimes you want (er, need) to switch things up.

Let's talk about the classic mint julep: the cocktail includes three simple ingredients –– bourbon, mint, and sugar. It's served with crushed ice in a pewter juelp cup (although an old fashioned glass is also acceptable).
