Last week on Eater, Matt Lewis from Baked Bakery said that he was confused over the current pie hype. Will pie take over cupcakes in the race towards baked good domination? Matt Lewis doesn't think so. The cupcake is here to stay, and here are 5 reasons why.
This got us thinking about the piece he wrote about cupcakes last year on Eat Me Daily.
The piece entitled "There Will Never be a New Cupcake", is everything we've come to expect from Lewis: opinionated, witty, and fun. In it, he writes that "the cupcake is the king of desserts, there will never be anything that comes close to it, and America’s appetite for it will never be sated." Lewis gives 5 reasons for cupcakes' popularity and staying power:
1) They're Easy to Make
2) A Cupcake Kitchen is an Economical Kitchen
3) They're Cute (he actually used a bit looser terminology here)
4) They're Creative Outlets
5) They're Easy on the Wallet
So what do you think? Or perhaps we should all just take a cue from Lewis' recent piece, entitled "Let's Talk About Pie Less and Eat it More", share a cupcake, and shut up already.

While I like cupcakes, I'm tired of the cupcake shop trend and cupcakes at weddings. It was cool 10 years ago. Now they're tired.
Donuts are the new cupcake.
(6) They're easy to eat, without the need for plates, utensils, etc.
That said, pie beats cake (of any sorts, regular or cup) any day of the week. So bring on the pie!
I disagree that they are easier on the wallet - it is cheaper to buy a cake for 4+ people than it is to buy the equivalent in cupcakes.
Whenever I see a ton of cupcakes at a party, it makes me roll my eyes at the tweeness of it all.
I think cupcakes are annoying - I much prefer a nice layer cake - but I have to admit they are easier to eat on the go or when you're celebrating something at a non-dining establishment (i.e., a friend's birthday at a bar - cupcakes are easier than bringing a knife, plates, forks)
I think the backlash against cupcakes is more about the $3+ cupcake that may look pretty but tastes like cardboard, and I find all the "crazy" flavors super obnoxious. Give me a home-baked vanilla cupcake any day!
i'm not sure i understand where everyone thinks the cupcake is going? they've been around for quite a while, like since the 20's (commercially). just because some people have blown it way out of proportion and made cupcakes into a sort of fad doesn't mean they will cease to be in a few years. and "baked good domination"??? is it really a contest?
cupcakes are yummy, pie is yummy...
i'm voting for the "shut up" and eat already path for this topic.
I've always been a pie gal. I had a pie wedding reception 7 years ago. I am going to get flack for this one, but....I hate frosting. That being said, I also adore cookies.
Is Eat Me Daily defunct?
I stilll heart cupcakes. Granted, this may have something to do with the fact that I am a mother to a 3yr old little girl ....
I like cupcakes. And pie, and layer cakes, and tortes, and cookies, and muffins .... no well-made baked good will ever not be in my heart! (And in my arteries!)
Love cupcakes - they aren't going anywhere b/c of all the above reasons and bc they are automatic portion control. I love a good layer cake but they are generally messy to eat and you have to cut a larger piece to support all the layers.....I agree that I am over the super pricey cupcakes though - please. Pie, cake, cupcakes, I love them all....too bad I am having gluten probs. sigh.
I have never really been a fan of the cupcake. I find that most are pretty to look at, but terribly disappointing once you bite into them. On the other side it is not very often you see a beautiful piece of pie, yet no matter how ugly or "rustic" the crust or contents may be it always tastes good!
SO OVER cupcakes. I'm with Nicole309...cute, but not all that tasty. Pie, donuts, whatever, i don't care, just no more cupcakes.
Saying cupcakes are going away is like saying cookies are going away... I get the haters, but all cupcakes are not euqal. Trophy Cupcakes in Seattle are king. Hands down, they are the best in the US of A.
Jess13, cupcakes have been around for a really long time, but in the past several years they've exploded in popularity. Cupcakes are a huge trend, and the idea was that the trend is waning.
Cupcakes aren't "going anywhere" in the sense that nobody is going to eat cupcakes anymore, but at some point they will die down in popularity and be replaced by another trendy food item.
Keldoo, Cupcake Royale is DEFINITELY the best! Their frosting is just slightly better, I think! But I'm a HUGE cupcake fan, and would be so sad to see them go (although I could just make my own, but they'd never be as pretty). Pie just is not the same. Something about the mouthfeel of cake is far superior to pie filling...
Pies? While I love pies so much more than over sugary and boring cupcakes, unless someone figures out how to get them mini and on a stick (or easy to eat), I doubt it... too messy for an on the go thing or boutique feel.
That being said I do think DONUTS could be the new cupcake... Is it just me have they been popping up everywhere trendy bakeries are? I see 'em at farmers market, the cover of cookbooks (ie. Babycake's new cookbook), and such... easy to eat, wide variety, delicious :)
That's funny, when I interviewed Lewis in 2009 he talked about being over the cupcake trend!
"A lot of the metropolitan areas became cupcake obsessed and were completely forgetting all of the other American baked goods that are out there, like cakes and cookies and brownies," Lewis says. "We decided to go full-force into American baking but kind of elevate it and treat it like it was the epitome of dining, as opposed to something just cute and fun. We want to be cute and playful too, but our brownies are the bomb, and I think a brownie made well is just as good as a cute little cupcake — in fact I think they're better."

I'd take a slice of cake over a cupcake any day. Most cupcakery cupcakes are overpriced for the amount of cake you get, and way, way overfrosted. Having to bend my face to avoid slamming a huge hat of sugar frosting into my nose is one of the chief things that makes eating those mini-treats awkward. Also, since there's more outside surface area exposed to heat in baking, cupcakes are more likely than cakes to have a dry texture.
I love cupcakes. Not a pie girl at all which makes my hubby really sad becuase he is a pie boy.
I agree that the cupcake shop fad will pass but cupcakes at real bakeries and at home will reign forever.
