I have a small obsession with a good peanut butter sandwich. There's nothing wrong with a simple slather between two pieces of bread, but I'm always excited to jazz things up. 10 of my favorite peanut butter sandwich combos can be found over at Ohdeedoh. The fine folks over at Peanut Butter & Company have a few more ideas, too, and they're a little more, how shall we say, bizarre — but beautiful!
Lee Zalben, the founder of Peanut Butter & Co., has been doing his best to twist the traditional concept of a peanut butter sandwich while still keeping it familiar and tasty. This past year he decided to make a new sandwich a day and some of the results were recently shown at a 3-day pop-up shop gallery opening in New York City.
While some of his sandwich creations leave me running for the kitchen (or even the grocery store), others will bring you to a full stop and have you scratching your head and asking, "Huh, wonder if that's any good?"
Pictured above are five of the creations. You can see more over at the Peanut Butter & Co Tumblr. It's packed with all sorts of interesting creations including a towering honey open-faced piece and one made with donuts as bread!

Check out the captions above to find out what's in each creation. Which one looks like your favorite? I know you're all dying to try a big bite of bread coated in pixie sticks, filled with lime curd — oh yeah, and peanut butter of course!

Bacsac Bacsquare 04...

Hmmm....the apples, raisins and bacon sound like good additions as do the chocolate chips. But I am skeptical about American cheese (sounds disgusting), tomatoes and onions. Marshmallows sounds too sweet to me but probably no sweeter than my preference to make my PB sandwich with a ripe banana and a good drizzle of honey.
Grilled peanut butter and raspberry jam sandwich was the best park of my childhood.
My husbands family makes banana mush. Its peanut butter, a banana, and mayo mixed. I have never been able to try it, but he now has my kids hooked on it.
That candy crusted bread is gross looking. My boyfriend, every morning, eats an English muffin with Teddie's natural peanut butter and a generous squirt of Siracha. The first time he did it I was aghast. Now that I see Peanut Butter Co. has a specific blend of peanut butter and spicy....well, I guess I owe him an apology. The man is ahead of his time.
The most bizarre I've found is this burger joint that has a burger with pb & cream cheese topping. Never had the guts to try it out.
My dad has always liked peanut butter and Lebanon bologna sandwiches... I tried one once. [wrinkles nose] I didn't like it.
I used to eat pb and american cheese sandwiches when I was a kid. I think I tricked my grandmother into giving it to me by telling her that my parents make it all the time... I was a weird kid. :)
My mom loves peanut butter and bacon sandwiches. It's one of her favorite things in the whole world. I (being vegetarian) prefer peanut butter and dill pickles, or peanut butter and pickled pepper rings. Yum!
My mother swears by peanut butter and sardine sandwiches, but she has yet to convince me.
Hey, peanut butter and tomato sandwiches are delicious. As are pb and sharp cheddar.
My dad used to make "daddy special" - liver paste and peanut butter. Oh how I loved them, and miss those days.
My mom used to make a weird sandwich for us that was always my favorite: Natural peanut butter, cheddar cheese, alfalfa sprouts and mayo on wheat. I still make it to this day -- my husband thinks I'm crazy.
My dad always had peanut butter on his hot dogs with the usual ketchup, mustard and relish. He would also eat pb and peperoni sandwiches. Us kids just thought he was gross!
My prefered PB&J has several layers. Peanut butter (preferably crunchy and natural, since I am not a sweet peanut butter person) on one slice of bread, Strawberry or raspberry jelly on the other and in between a layer of bananas and chips. I can live with out the banans, but I have to have the chips.
As a kid my favourite was peanut butter and caramel spread. Healthy? Not so much. I've recently become very fond of peanut butter and thinly sliced and fried veggie sausage, probably not unlike awallnut's dad's pb and pepperoni.
I grew up PB, ketchup and bacon on toast! My husband thinks its freaky and probably hoped it was a symptom of pregnancy!
Until I tried it, I would never have thought I would like PB and bacon (esp. since the PB is mixed with mayo), but I love it. My husband has also recently discovered PB and nutella--also not so healthy.
Peanut butter, cream cheese, chicken floss and a sprinkling of chili flakes. Trust me, it's not as weird as it sounds.
@jess pith Thanks so much for the Teddie shout out!! And you're right ... a bit of SPICE could be the perfect way to dress the Teddie in the morning! Kudos to your sweetie!!
My husband swears by PB, dill pickles and mayo (preferably Miracle Whip). He says don't knock it until you try it. . . . I still haven't ;).
Peanut butter and alfalfa sprouts is life changing. Also if you are feeling particularly adventurous, add tuna salad. Amazing play of textures.
We tend to think of pb as a sweet add-in since with jelly or jam it is sweeter, and it's in so many dessert items. But it is actually savory! (Assuming you buy the real stuff!)
My partner eats peanut butter, turkey (or bologna), mustard and cheese sandwiches. She's very particular about the order in which it is assembled. Cheese on the peanut butter side, then the meat and then mustard on the meat side.
I have never tried it but I did try her addition of peanut butter to a hamburger and while it isn't something I'd eat again it wasn't as revolting as it seemed.
I've always, since I was little, been a big fan of peanut butter, jam, and lettuce sandwiches. Doesn't add much flavor, but the lettuce really adds a nice crunch. And it made me feel healthier as a kid!
My favorite is crunchy peanut butter with honey or maple ham and provolone cheese. Toasted garlic bread is a bonus, but white bread is my usual.
um...I like peanut butter ok, but it is not a food group, so can be eliminated from time to time from our plates, right? All of the sandwiches listed above sound interesting WITHOUT the peanut butter.
I can't believe no one has mentioned peanut butter and sweet pickles. Yum, the best! I can't deal with peanut butter and tuna but I might try alfalfa sprouts. Pickles...yum.
Peanut butter and olives... Can't get enough. I'd heard about it somewhere many years ago and made it one day because thats all that was around. So glad I didn't chicken out. They're a running favorite. I also get the occasional craving for peanut butter and dill pickle chips. Mmmm, crunchy.
I grew up eating peanut butter, american cheese, jelly, and butter sandwiches. I really thought the B in PB&J was butter and was always confused about where the C was. I also recently tried a peanut butter and bacon burger and.....yum. And I don't love burgers in general,
I love crunchy pb mixed with tofu, sriracha, ginger, garlic, and soy on my sandwich. That sandwich is fantastic when toasted. Another weird, but delicious pb sandwich is crunchy pb, medjool dates, and tomato basil chips on 12 grain bread.
