I enjoy eating meat as much as the next person, except when it comes to ground meat. I have a weird textural issue with ground meat and shy away from it except for the occasional (gasp) lean ground turkey. Therefor, I have to get creative when it comes to an occasional burger craving.
During summer months my fiance and I grill as much as possible. He's a huge burger lover and while I typically grill a piece of chicken when he eats burgers and hot dogs I do often crave a really delicious meatless burger. Sure, I've tried the store bought variety but they simply do not even come close to comparing to a homemade meatless burger.
Black bean burgers are a staple in the vegetarian world because you can always count on them to turn out the same each time. They're filling, delicious and the texture isn't off putting like many meatless burgers can be. If you're looking to branch out from the ordinary, I'd recommend trying the Baked Eggplant Burger from The Tolerant Vegan. It sounds so tasty even though it's not exactly what you'd think to replace ground meat with!
Here are 5 meatless burgers to grill this weekend:
• Classic Bean Burger, A Couple Cooks
• Chickpea Burger, Martha Stewart
• Quinoa Burger, Eating Well.. Living Thin
• Baked Eggplant Burger, The Tolerant Vegan
• Bean Burger, Angry Chicken

The black bean burger in Veganamicon is my go-to veggie burger that actually makes omnivores happy. It is so so good. I usually serve w/guacamole and chipotle mayo (plus lettuce, tomato, etc.). But I'm thinking it would be awesome with mango salsa.
Cooking Light hasa some very good veggie burger recipes online. The most unusual was the red lentil with aioli. Very nice and light.

I love the veggie burger from The Whitewater Cookbook (which is a staple in this part of the world). I love meat too, depends on my mood.
Why does an article about meatless burgers need to begin with an affirmation that of course you're not a vegetarian, you love meat but you know, not this particular variety. Why couldn't it just be presented as an article about meatless burgers, not an article about "dependable" black bean burgers?
@jrossi1217, I agree, it kind of hints at and re-affirms that being vegetarian is "sooo other" and also re-inforces that meat-centric meals are the norm. On a site like this, you would expect that the contributors would get that you don't have to be vegetarian to not be meat-centric... no disclaimers needed.
Even still, really appreciate this post:) 2 thumbs up!
That MS chickpea burger is a staple in our house -- it's really simple, nutritious and delicious!
As someone who's been going out to burger-n-brew night once, sometimes twice a week this summer, I'm going to try these all of these recipes. My waistline and wallet thank you.
I've also had fantastic success with all of Mark Bittman's veggie burger recipes. I have How to Cook Everything Vegetarian, but I think many of the recipes are available on his NY Times blog. The nut burger is my favorite!
Do any of these (or other bean burgers) freeze well? I do eat meat but I'm not a huge fan. I'd love to have something to grill up with my husband when he has burgers, but I really dislike the store bought veggie burgers because of the soy in them. Anyone have experience with freezing?
everythingistaken- I make a batch of black bean, millet, corn mix for patties and freeze what I don't use. Best to form the patties before freezing then they are ready to go. They freeze well but best to use up in three months.
this is a great recipe for easy healthy patties-

Instead of buns only because beans and grains with bread is too much for me so I use butter lettuce or red leaf lettuce as my bun. I love to add tahini, chopped tomatoes and red onion.
Are any of these recipes gluten free?
