While we know that nothing can completely cure the common cold, there are certainly remedies to help ease the symptoms. And when your throat is burning up, your body aches, and you can't stop the sniffles, a little something to soothe goes a long way. These five drinks, including a cough syrup for grown-ups and a ginger tumeric tea (among others), will do just that.
• 1 Bourbon Cough Syrup for Grownups, via The Kitchn: an easy nightcap, steaming and warm, with a stiff shot of booze to put you to sleep.
• 2 Hot Apple-Ginger Toddy, via The Kitchn: chunks of the spicy ginger root (thought to have some anti-viral properties) are perfect paired with lemon, apples, honey, and a little whiskey or applejack.
• 3 Rock and Rye, via Saveur: Spooned into tea or sipped straight, this spicy-sweet cordial is soothing relief for the sniffles.
• 4 Tumeric Ginger Tea, via The Kitchn: this non-alcoholic tea is made with soy milk and honey, which help balance the slightly bitter and pungent spices. The result is earthy and comforting.
• 5 Harvest Punch, via Beyond Kimchee: a Korean remedy for a cold, made with dried jujubees, pears, ginger, and cinnamon.
What are your favorite hot drinks (both boozy and not) to soothe cold symptoms?

Bacsac Bacsquare 04...

I have a "recipe" I like to make from the awesome San Francisco restaurant Outerlands. I don't have measurements I just adjust until it tastes right. Good apple cider, ginger juice (which you can get from The ginger People, it's sold at Whole Foods) cinnamon, star anise, lemon slices, and cinnamon. It's so yummy!
I like to steep thick, slightly crushed slices of ginger and lemon with honey in hot water. Simple, soothing and comforting.
1 cup of Mint tea with a splash of booze (preferably bourbon, but anything will do) and a 1/3 cup honey. Coats the throat and knocks you out.
definitely make the rock & rye recipe. do not purchase the premade, bottled stuff at the store. it's awful.
Hot Hot Doctor Pepper soda is very soothing
I swear by a hot whiskey - stud a wedge of lemon with cloves (putting them in the lemon theoretically stops them floating to the top where you swallow them), put it in a glass with a spoonful of sugar, add a glug of whiskey, top up with hot water. Heats you up from the inside. My great-aunt, who died last year at the age of 100, had one every night before she went to bed (and when she died it wasn't from a cold!)
Yeah, seconding the nightly hot whiskey. I don't add lemon or sugar, but one part whiskey, one part boiling water with a few cloves is the most excellent nightcap in the world.
My mom always made me what she called honey lemon, and is basically just that. Hot water, freshly squeezed lemon juice, honey, and now as an adult, I add cayenne pepper. Especially good for sore throats, the cayenne kicks that cold's booty.
Plus one for the lemon and honey, sometimes ginger. I swear it can even stave off a cold.
