Dishwashers are a love hate relationship for some and straight up mandatory for busy households on the go. What time do you run yours? Here's a few tips on why starting it before bed is the most beneficial for your family!
Even though many don't own a dishwasher, others do and there's a bit of know how that goes along with it. They're an appliance like everything else, but the times in which we run it can impact our home, bills and peace and quiet. Here's a few things to keep in mind:
1. Humidity versus Air Conditioner: Your dishwasher adds humidity back into your kitchen air and even though it's much needed to get the dishes dry, it means your air conditioner has to work a little bit harder. Even though some might live where air conditioning isn't needed, it's still pushing triple digits in many places. At night, when your house is more calm, that need won't be as great.
2. Sound Reduction: Although some have new quiet dishwashers, many of us have older units that hum, buzz or just make what could be considered the loudest white noise you've ever heard. Although it doesn't make you go crazy, it will make you turn the tv up or talk louder in your own home. Run it at night and let that noise soothe you to sleep instead!
3. Avoid Higher Energy Costs: After lunch and dinner is when many cities are using the highest amounts of energy and thus, the charges for such use is higher. If you can delay your dishwasher, set it to go off after midnight, helping your pocket book by a few pennies. It all adds up at the end of the month!

I know it makes sense to run the dishwasher at night, but I just can't. Ditto the washer or dryer. And I can't leave the house with them running either. Things go wrong, sometimes. I can testify :)
It takes a couple of days to fill my dishwasher, but I generally run it in the morning.
Always turn the dishawasher on just before going upstairs to bed for all three of the above reasons. :)
We are a household of 5 and 3 of those are 6 years old and under. We go through a lot of dishes! I run the dishwasher twice a day. After lunch and after dinner. I used to only do once a day, but if I can start dinner with an empty dishwasher it makes the biggest difference in kitchen clean up and we enjoy our evening
much more.
I run mine every two or three days and always run it a night for all of those reasons mentioned above as well.
Great idea for energy, but bad idea if the dishwasher were to leak. Rule of thumb is to only run your dishwasher, washer, dryer, etc... while you are physically at home and awake so that if a flood or electrical fire were to occur, you would be able to react to the situation. I agree with running the dishwasher later in the evening and run my so it finishes right before I head up to bed, but I would advise against having it run while you are sleeping.
My dishwasher plays a little ditty when it's done. Cute, but more than loud enough to wake me. De-DedeDe-De-DedeDe-DitDe-DeDitDe-Dede.
Heck with the dishwasher tips, where can I get that set of dishes in the picture?! :)
As an apartment dweller I struggle with this myself. For my own convenience, I have no problems or fears regarding running it at night right before we head to bed-- I prefer it. But I wonder if my downstairs neighbor would be impacted? Can any downstairs renters comment on this? Do you hear it when your upstairs neighbors run the dishwasher at night?
@MissMarked: I can hear my neighbors washer and dishwasher but marginally. You have to ask your neighbors cause it all depends on the construction of your building at the quality of your dishwasher. I'm sure they will be happy to tell you especially since you are going out of your way to be so considerate.
I agree with Matt. Good idea if it weren't for the risk of water damage. One of my friends woke up one morning to find that his dishwasher had flooded his whole kitchen. They had to move out for over a month for mold removal and repairs.
dishwashers can also start fires. i read an article recently about deaths from an electrical fire caused by running the dishwasher overnight, while the homeowners slept. if the homeowners would have been awake, they presumably would have noticed the smoke before it was too late.
I have to interject here. Running a dishwasher during the day (when you're most likely using hot water in your sink) ensures that it is running at it's peak performance since there will be plenty of hot water to go around and means the machine doesn't have to work as hard to heat itself up (less energy usage). As an appliance sales person I recommend that the dishes are done during the day.
laurennoel33 - That's not entirely true as most dishwashers heat the water themselves instead of using hot water straight from the source.
We also run ours overnight. It works well for us, because the dinner dishes are washed immediately before food has a chance to really dry on, and then the dishes are ready for a quick 5 minute unload before I leave for work in the morning.
@MaryMarked I can only hear our upstairs neighbours run the garbage disposal, not the dishwasher to my knowledge. Still, I'd feel rude running it late at night and worry about it until I knew it was finished.
Good points well taken ebarrett3 & Raine_p. Thanks!
sarahrae: true but dishwashers only heat the water as much as they have too.
The problem with tip number three is that not many residential settings have time of use electric meters so time of day has no effect on how much your electric costs.
I would love to be able to run our dishwasher at night--unfortunately I'm a little too nervous after we had two kitchen floor flooding incidents within days of each other, both within our first month at our place. Thankfully its problem has been fixed, but the trouble it caused won't be forgotten...
Someone recently posted on thekitchn about how their dishwasher started a fire while it was running at night. Since hearing that, I've lived in fear of running it at night! The apartment I recently lived in had no second exit, and the dishwasher was right by the sole exit, so I only ran it while we were awake or gone.
Usually can't run it in the middle of the night, as our water softener or the water system's iron filter runs anywhere from 2 to 5 a.m. Water can't be used during those regenerations (we have well water).
Our dw is 21+ yrs old so I have to manually add more detergent for the second wash cycle (the little dispenser-thingy does not pop open on its own), plus I stop it before it enters the drying cycle to save on energy. So... daytime for me.
Never will do it. We had two water problems when it was running while we were gone - it flooded the kitchen in three inches of water. Never never never again.
I run my dishwasher at night so my husband will have to unload it in the morning (after I leave for work), lol.
I watched TV one night while mine was running and walked into the dark kitchen into a flood. It ruined all the floors, and was still pumping it out...cannot imagine what would have happened if I went to bed!
A few months ago I wouldn't have hesitated to start the dishwasher on my way to bed, but after reading a few different stories about fires that can be started by appliances (even "wet" ones; I never really thought that would happen) I try to never run it overnight. If something were to happen, it would not only block our way out the door, but also keep us seperate from our kids rooms! Scary thought
! I am however aware of peak energy times, so I try to run the FULL dishwasher when I wake up in the morning, then try to do any wash before the peak hours start at 1pm, and only run one appliance at a time. I think that has substantially kept our energy bill down. The tip about running at night having a lesser effect on your a/c is tempting, but for our safety I'd much rather just turn on the kitchen fan.
The primary reason why I like to run my dishwasher at night- I don't have to unload it until the next day!
Bad advice! I, too, used to run my dishwasher overnight. Then, I came down one morning to a flooded kitchen floor - my newish dishwasher had leaked and the water had sat on the hardwood floor overnight...partially mopped up by the kitchen rug but still a huge mess. Shortly thereafter, a friend of mine had a fire caused by the dishwasher's heating element - luckily she was home and it was daytime. Since then, mine only gets run when I'm home and awake, just like the dryer.
I'm too concerned about it starting a fire. I've heard many stories of house fire starting due to a dishwasher (my husband's aunt had that happen, as well as many stories online) and as a child our dishwasher malfunctioned and burned a hole through the top control panel (thank god it did not start a fire, probably due to the fact that it was day time and my mom smelled the burning plastic and turned it off!).
Ever since I read this article (the second part includes a terrifying pic of a post-fire dishwasher), I refuse to run the dishwasher at night.

Plus, the drain line runs right under our master bedroom, and makes a "thump... thump... thump..." noise that sounds like a serial killer in our crawlspace.
I run my dishwasher at night I heard it saves energy along with washer and dryer
I run my dishwasher at night. Why? Because that is what my grandma always did and the sound actually reminds me of bed time and the wonderful sleep overs at her house.
ha! I agree with Matt... I am so paranoid about running the dishwasher when no one is here ever since one completely flooded our home when I was a child. Completely flooded, inhabitable for a week situation.
I do agree that those kinds of noises are soothing at night, but I think a running dishwasher would actually keep me awake because with every sound I will wonder if a disaster is beginning. And now I live in a second floor apartment where I am liable if I cause water damage downstairs!
I'm also not sure how it "saves energy". The only difference between night and day is where the sun is located. Using the energy at night instead of the day is still using the energy.
It's not saving energy in the sense that it cuts your utility bills (though some areas do charge different rates at different times of the day). Running major appliances in "off-peak" hours reduces the overall amount of energy a power plant has to produce to keep up with demand during the day.
The best thing about our new dishwasher is the delayed start function; I set ours to run at 2:00 am.
Always run mine at night which is especially important in winter, as mentioned above, it helps heat and add moisture to dry air. Also because chemicals are used in regular dishwasher soap/tablets and you end up breathing it all in go for the ones that are chem free.
I run mine at night or get it to run right as I am leaving for work. I prefer not to be around right as it finishes because I want to unload it right away and get burned =(
I run the dishwasher at a time when I'm there to open it up a minute or two after the dry cycle begins. Then I open it (if I want the warm moisture) or keep it closed overnight - the dishes dry either way, and I don't use unnecessary heat and electric.
I also don't run the "dry" portion of the cycle and don't have a way to turn it off on the dishwasher itself, so I only run it when I am around to listen for the rinsing to be finished so I can open it. This probably saves more energy than running it in the wee hours, I would think...
Your reasons are exactly why I run my dishwasher at night. I turn it on before I go to bed. Religiously.
I miss running my dishwasher at night. We now live in a loft, just over 1,000 sq. feet and running the dishwasher at night is not an option.
I do work from home, so I usually run it first this in the morning, and that works for us.
