Growing up there were always placemats on the kitchen table. They were there not only for decoration, but also for their functionality. When someone would make a mess, it wouldn't be a big fuss because they were easy to wipe off and put back on the table. Even when the "fancy" linen placemats were brought out, no one cried over spilt juice because they were just thrown in the washer.
Placemats aren't just for children or to easily clean spills. Many people use them strictly for aesthetic reasons, and we certainly understand why. Not all placemats are created equal &mdash some are extremely unique and amazingly beautiful.

SIGH....I find that I am slowly going through my existing stash of linen placemats due to a 2.5 yr old that happens to be a very 'enthusiastic' eater. What were once sets of 4 in pretty good condition are now sets of 2 or 3 and even those remaining have stains that I can't get out. Just the other day I threw away one that was so stained with tomato sauce that there was no going back. Oh well....
I'd love to see some stylish, yet functional placemats that can be easily wiped clean.
I usually hate placemats (I hate when they get stained – it just grosses me out when I’m trying to eat). But, I found some at CB2 that I love. I get a lot of compliments on them.
@rosebud... I highly recommend the moderntwist ones (silicone). That's what I got and it makes cleaning up after my two year old very easy. I just rinse it off under the faucet or wipe it. Nothing has stained them so far...
I love my linen placemats, which is good because my glass table can't live without them.
They're black to match my decor, bonus that they hide stains well.
