I've had mason jars leak before if you're transporting something like soup. Something thicker like yogurt, you're probably fine.
Snapware truly is leakproof.
I just got my GOODBYN in the mail after a half off sale on gilt.com. So far, I love it! For me it's easier to ensure a balanced lunch with 3 compartments and the tiny water bottle that came with it is great for salad dressings. It's compact enough to fit in the busy work fridge and it's super easy to clean.
preserve makes some wonderful screw-top containers.
Lock & Lock or similar. Absolutely leakproof, especially if you fill in the contents while they are still hot and then cool the whole thing down.
Mason jars are anything but leak proof, unfortunately.
This is another leak-proof option that is silicone and collapsible.
Here's the smaller version. I found out about this through 101 Cookbooks. Heidi uses it for her in-flight meals from home.
From experience, snapware truly is leakproof. I take soupy meals to work for lunch all the time and it hasn't spilled yet.
If I use non-snapware glass storage, I wrap plastic wrap across the opening and then put the cover on. But that might be too much work for some people.
I just bought the black+blum lunch pot and bento box a couple days ago. I can't wait to use them. The design is so clever.
the thing that bugs me is that the silicone/plastic lids always keep the smell of the food
I've always been fine with the lock and lock line. But again, I don't really eat soup, so I don't know if it's *that* leakproof.
I really like my Ms. Bento lunch jar. The soup holder is leak proof as long as you don't fill it too much. It also has the advantage of not needing to be refrigerated.
I use the mason jars for lunch since I can batch cook a pot of soup and then put them into portion friendly mason jars and freeze them. In the morning, I grab them straight from the freezer (and since they are frozen, have no problem with leakage on my commute to work!) and then let them thaw for lunch.
I do use a locking lid for fresh soup or liquids meals though.
Snapware glasslock containers have never leaked on me, even when inverted.
Yep, the Lock & Lock containers are *that* leakproof. I send just about everything w/my 4yo for lunch, and no leaks at all. I use them too - love 'em.
Pyrex with No-Leak lids are good too, but I prefer Snapware.
