It's getting cold in the mornings, and it's dark when we wake up for work. We are less and less inclined to make a real breakfast in the morning, but we need it more than ever. Here are ten recipes and ideas for a hot, nourishing breakfast on the go. From quick morning recipes, to dishes that can be made ahead and reheated at the office, you can find something here to start your day off right. Put away the Pop-Tarts and have a home-cooked breakfast this week!
• Steel-cut Oats - These are my favorite hot breakfast. They are also the easiest, and the fastest. The night before you want them, bring the oats to boil with hot water, then turn off the heat and cover the pot. In the morning, all you have to do is heat up a cup of the now-tender oatmeal in the microwave or on the stovetop. See more here: Slow and Easy: How to Cook Perfect Steel-Cut Oats
• Oatmeal Clafoutis - These fruity, oaty bars can be made ahead and refrigerated or even frozen. A quick shot in the microwave makes them piping hot and so nice to eat on the way to work.
• Zucchini and Olive Breakfast Cake, French-Style - This savory "cake" is absolutely delicious when griddled. Heat up a little olive oil in a skillet, and toast this on both sides. Totally quick - easy to do even on a busy morning.
• Baked Apple Streusel Pancake Bars - Another make-ahead morning treat that can be warmed up in the microwave or toaster oven.
• "Ham and Cheese" Breakfast Casserole - Three cheers for breakfast casseroles! This is so good heated up in the oven or on the stovetop.
• Enriched Cream of Wheat with Egg and Vanilla - A very quick hot breakfast, but creamy and sweet — almost pudding-like, with an addition of an egg to the cereal as it cooks. This is a winter favorite in my household!
• Breakfast Poha with Coconut - This quick, Southern-Indian rice dish is absolutely fabulous on a cold morning. You can make it ahead and reheat it, too.
• Tex-Mex Migas - A quick, hearty scramble that uses leftover tortillas.
• Crustless Mini-Quiches - A great make-ahead recipe with lots of adaptation potential. Throw in whatever you want, and just heat up a handful before you run out the door. These freeze well too.
• Butternut Squash, Sage, and Parmesan Pasties - Make ahead, and reheat in the office toaster oven. So warm and nourishing!
What's your favorite hot breakfast for cold, busy weekdays?

Timely, necessary. I stood at the fridge this morning and thought, "It's not 40 degrees out there; I cannot possibly eat cereal for breakfast on a day like this," and it's only going to get colder.
Thanks for including some more savory breakfast make-aheads as well; sometimes I get into a sweet stuff rut!
I toss frozen fruit, almonds and sunflower seeds into a mason jar, cover it with quick oats and milk and takje it with me to work. A minute and a half in the office microwave and I have fruity, sweet but not too sweet oatmeal, piping hot. Mmm! (I'm working on switching to steel-cut....)
My favorite quick breakfast is PB&J banana oatmeal -- I make a serving of oats, whip in thin pieces of banana until the oats are fluffy, then top the whole thing with peanut butter and jelly! Filling and delicious.
Don't forget your delicious recipes for polenta! I recently made some polenta with some diced up breakfast sausage and red bell peppers mixed in. Then poached an egg and settled it on top, cracked open the yolk and let it ooze out amongst the cornmeal goodness. Hot and delicious! (And, since the polenta was left over, it probably took 15 minutes all told to make up the bowl.)
I heat up grape nuts. It's nice and oatmeal-y but super fast--like less than a minute in the microwave. Excellent with almond milk!
Some interesting ideas for breakfast. I really want to try the breakfast poha, will have to try to find poha though.
it sounds weird, but when i nuke cereal and milk it makes a nice "soup:"

I eat cooked oatmeal every day. Pancakes are my favourite warm breakfast, though; I'm especially fond of apple and walnut. Winter is a great time for food, eh?
Thank you for this post! I've been fumbling through the kitchen cabinets these days, frantically trying to pull something comforting together for breakfast on these cold autumn mornings. The mini quiche and apple struesel pancake bar recipes shall be utilized at my house soon!
Left over Apple crumble is delicious for breakfast - hot or cold :-) Yum. Or just stewed apple with sultanas is lovely, but could be more filling. Maybe adding it to oats would be good.
If you don't like sweet things in the morning, you can make savory oatmeal with parmesean, extra virgin olive oil, and cracked black pepper. Maybe even throw a poached egg on top.
microwaved scrambled eggs! doesn't take more than a minute and a half tops.
Delicious on top of buttered wheat toast or on its own.
I'm a big fan of oatmeal. It started with the instant stuff my mother made in the microwave until my guy introduced me to the deliciousness of steel-cut with salt, brown sugar, and cinnamon. It's delicious and the way that it tends to just *sit* in your stomach means you're definitely not hungry until lunch.
Freshly brewed strong, black coffee.
@JeanettesHealthyLiving : You can buy Poha at an Indian grocery store. Make sure you buy "thick" poha and not the "thin" poha, or you'll be left with a gluey mess! Poha is yummy with onion, potato and peas and lots of fresh lemon and cilantro garnish!
I could eat breakfast all day, in fact today I practically have, cereal for breakfast, yoghurt and nuts for lunch and perhaps a bowl of this delicious recipe for dinner.
Breakfast is my most favourite meal of the day and eating it always makes me happy! The steel cut oats recipe looks so, so, so yummy!

Sad to say I didn't know that cold breakfasts were even an option til I grew up and left home. A result of living in a cold country no less..My mum always made steel cut oats OR porridge (cornmeal cooked in milk with nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice and brown sugar) Or a full english accented with fried plantains and/or fried breadfruit.
That sort of stuff stuck to your ribs and kept you warm for hours on end.

Agreed on the steel-cut oats. We just make a whole pot on Sunday and store it in a tupperware; then just take as needed and microwave. The beauty of it is that you can change the taste from day-to-day depending on what ingredients are on hand.
My other standby;
Lightly grease a ramakin, crack an egg into it (be sure that you break the yolk- lest it should explode in the micro)... microwave on high for a minute and toss onto some whole-wheat toast with fresh spinache or a tomato slice. Breakfast sandwich in under two minutes!
The Ham and Cheese Casserole sounds wonderful to me. Some may call it a strata. I would call it a savory bread pudding.
Breakfast for me is at work. Usually scramble eggs with tarragon in the microwave and add shredded cheese after its cooked.
This would be a nice change. I could make it at home on the weekend and then take slices to work and heat up in the microwave. Yum.
