Unless you've been living under a rock the last year, you have undoubtedly heard about Marie Kondo's manifesto for a happy life: keep only those things that spark joy. While somewhat impractical advice for the kitchen (although not entirely!), it reminds us that it's good to have a few fun and pretty — and yes, probably completely unnecessary — things in the kitchen, little somethings that make us smile whenever we look at or use them.
Not everything in our kitchens has to be a dire essential. Here are 10 sweet extras.
1. Microbasket, $36 from General Store
What use could there possibly be in the kitchen for a tiny 3 1/2-inch tall basket? Well when the mini basket comes with a little handle that makes it easy to hang, you start envisioning the perfect spot for teaspoons or tasting spoons. Hang it on the wall, set it on the countertop next to your large ceramic utensil crock — either way, it's crazy cute. Enough said.
2. Stacking Thimble Bowls, $46 for set of four from Leif
These are the prettiest of all the pretty mini bowls — just right for salt, spice, and everything nice.
3. Autumn Ghost, $32 from More & Co.
This little guy serves absolutely no purpose. He's not a salt shaker, or a vessel of some kind. Nope. He's just a little ceramic ghost, the "perfect small friend to have around." Yes, totally agree. We want him on the kitchen window sill, pronto.
4. Monster Salt Cellar, $65 from MuddyHeart
Think of this guy as the guardian of all the other things you keep within arm's reach of the stove. He is also best friends with our little ghost buddy. (See above.)
5. Mini Wood Salt and Pepper Set, $18 from For the Host
A mini salt and pepper set that's lightly refined yet playful, in a variety of fun colors that make us feel like we're awash in a sea of confetti? We'll take it.
6. Rainbow Stripe Linen Napkin Set, $30 from Leif
These are perfection — the colors, the stripes. You can't see it, but the words "I will always make you happy" are woven into the linen threads. (Okay, not really.)
7. Fox and Girl Ceramic Mug Set, $36 from Marinski Heartmades
We drink our coffee black with a splash of whimsy, thank you very much.
8. Rain Cloud Coasters, $22 from Pygmy Cloud
Feel free to rain on our parade any day of the week. No, really. We insist.
9. Fried Egg Potholders, $22 from Red Stitch
We're making a fried egg with a fried egg potholder. Aw, go on!
10. Apple Serving Bowl, $25 from Burke Decor
You know you have five pounds of apples in your fridge right now. If apples rule your life in the fall, you might as well embrace it in every way you can.
What happy little things do you have around your kitchen?
