- What makes your small kitchen so cool?
- French country home meets sleek modern accessibility. Artist-designed custom finishes, local materials and artisans make this 90% American made.
- Describe a challenge you've overcome or a smart resource you've found for your kitchen.
- Being recently wheelchair bound, I challenged the standard solutions to ‘accessible design’ and created my own aesthetically pleasing and fully accessible modern solution. The biggest challenge was convincing others that it could be accomplished (and creating a wall that could support floating shelves made of repurposed Ohio barn beams and 4” thick Boos Block countertops)!
- What's your favorite meal to cook here?
- I approach cooking as a creative process, first picking out fresh organic items and building upon them. I don’t use recipes, but always including garlic and olive oil. Keeping a mostly vegetarian diet I do have times where seafood becomes the centerpiece of the meal. Using a tuna steak, Alaskan salmon, or some large scallops I sear them in olive oil, garlic, and S&P and pair with kale sesame soy-ginger noodles.

this is awesome and truly unique!
Love that 4" thick Boos countertop! Great choice Rachel.
This has a lot of character but it's still so polished. Great job!
Love it, and cheers to yet another Colombus-ite with a Cool Small Kitchen entry!
It is wonderful to see a stylish, functional, AND accessible kitchen!
@Rachel, thanks for inviting us into you beautiful kitchen. Love the sleek, rustic, elegant warmth ... quality materials & tranquil color palette. Adore your dining chairs!
@Rachel, is the wicker basket in the corner under your counter your waste basket or recycle bin?
What a beautiful, warm space!
Where did you get those white hanging containers?! I saw them on HGTV and have been looking for them ever since!
Rachy- what a beautiful kitchen. I adore it! Hopefully, I can see it in person soon!
Thank you everyone for your admiration! Being an artist, my home becomes its own gallery/installation piece. Please share as much as you can, I'd love to get momentum showing how beautiful accessible living can be!
@ LIFEABUNDANT -- the basket is for trash, recycling is in the closet!
@JACKLYNSHAFFER -- I picked those up at IKEA a few years ago.
You're so talented, I love it!
This one is so different! Definitely one of my favorites.
I love it. The color pallette makes me so very happy. So airy and open. And the counter tops are brilliant! Well done Rachel. Now when can I come over for dinner? :-)
This is my favorite of allll the kitchens. Amazingly stylish and functional.
Where does she store things? I only see two cabinets - one of which is over the fridge and not usable unless the home-owner is 7 feet tall.

Looks pretty but where's the storage?
while I like the design/color scheme, the knives being behind the cook top is a deal breaker, doesn't seem like a good idea to have to reach over hot things to grab sharp things. Especially when the hot things are fire. Also, I agree with SMOO007. Not a lot of storage, but that depends on the cook I guess. If you're reserved and all you use is a cast iron skillet and dutch oven for all your cooking, you probably don't need a lot of storage.
Rachel, where did you get that beautiful range hood? Thanks in advance!
As an OT I appreciate accessible design but you have taken this to a whole other level! what a functional, unique and truly gorgeous outcome...love it! truly inspiring!
really beautiful. and finally a kitchen that doesn't look like an ikea showroom. i love me some ikea, but builder-grade cabinets and some ikea accessories aren't enough to compete with something like this. lovely.
LOVE. So creative, beautiful, functional. Love the quiet color palette. I'm just curious as well where you have food and dishware storage? Do you have a pantry somewhere we can't see?
This kitchen is definitely 'cool'. But 'small'? In Europe, where I live, this kitchen is practically huge!
LOVE the countertops. Like crazy-love.
Why is there a colander on the stovetop?
This is so unique. I love the airy country feel of it, and the interesting sink/faucet combo! I would personally need way more storage, but I bet it works wonderfully for the owner.
Crazy about this one! Beautiful space.
