Q: Can someone recommend a good balsamic vinegar? I bought a locally made (NorCal) balsamic because I really enjoy this same brand's olive oil, but I do not really care for it. It's thin-bodied and just seems to be lacking something.
I like to support California-made products, but I am open to those that are not. I just don't feel like wasting money on another balsamic that is disappointing. Preferably not too expensive as I am on a limited budget. Any suggestions?

The Tree and Vine has some excellent Balsamic vinegar.

I love Calivinegar Barrel Aged Balsamic. It's thick and fruity - I've used it in a berry balsamic cobbler, over ice cream, and had more than a few spoonfuls straight from the bottle.

You mention NorCal as local -- have you been to Amphora Nueva in Berkeley? They have a very large selection of vinegars sold in barrels so you can taste before you buy. They also offer three different sized bottles for you to fill. Plus they have great olive oil!
La Vecchia Dispensa makes what I believe to be the best balsamic vinegars in the world. Seriously. The super-old ones are mind-blowingly good, but they offer a variety of ages and price points that are all stellar. You can buy them online here:

When my parents went to Napa, they brought me back a bottle of balsamic. I didn't open it forever because I'm really picky about my balsamic. I ran out of mine and had to open the one they got me.....OMG! Nothing compares to this one! It's so thick and sweet but perfectly balanced! It's by St. Helena Olive Oil Co. The website is SHOLIVEOIL.COM
there's a shop in downtown San Carlos on Laurel with numerous vinegars and oils - some flavored, some regionally sourced. The owner is extra friendly and talkative and you can taste any and all before you buy.
I second @Thewholesomehome. Their balsamic vinegar (and their olive oil) is fantastic. Also pretty good is Stonehouse California sold @ the Ferry Building. It's more pungent + sharp but much better than the typical grocery store variety. Good luck!
I love Carter & Cavero vinegars. DELISH! The stores are in NJ, but they ship all over: http://carterandcavero.com/vinegars
I am in love with the balsamic vinegar sold by the Temcula Olive Oil company. The oils are amazing also.
You can taste over 20 different types of balsamics and extra virgin olive oils at Mia Sorella in El Dorado Hills (between Sacramento & Lake Tahoe). They also have an online store. Delicious variety with a good price up to the very expensive Traditional Balsamic Vinegars of Modena Italy too.
The Vincent Arroyo Winery in Napa makes Cabernet Sauvignon Balsamic Vinegar and its far and away the best I've ever had. http://shop.vincentarroyo.com/food-gifts-c5.aspx
I love a reserve (aged) balsamic vinegar, it's thick, syrupy and sweeter than typical. I always only use organic oils and vinegars since I use them so often. The one I like is a Cali company but I forget the name :/
Villa Manodori, $46.- Most grocery stores here in SoCal carry it. It's thick, terribly tasty and works with sweet and savory dishes. Enjoy!
