Q: I'm trying to find a large (approx 25" x 20") butcher block/cutting board for the countertop of my new apartment. But I haven't seen many close to that size and the ones I have seen are WAY out of my price range.
Since the expense of moving has tapped me out for a while, I'm hoping to keep the purchase under $75. Have any suggestions on where I should be looking? Is my budget even reasonable?

Editor: Rachele, here are two options:
• Pastry/ Bread Board (pictured above), $89.99 at Overstock. A little out of your price range, but quite large and substantial.
• LAGAN Countertop, beech, $39 at IKEA. Or you could create your own cutting board with a slab of butcher block countertop, sanded down a bit and finished with food-grade oil.
Readers, any thoughts or ideas?

I have this one: http://www.pauladeenstore.com/Product/detail/Paula-Deen-Signature-Pantryware-18-25x22-25-in-Pie-Pastry-Board/238866
It's 22.5x18.25 and only $31.95. It has pie circles on one side, but I just flip it over and use the other side for a cutting board.
A little smaller, but still large at 16" x 24" and $75:

Find a local cabinet maker and contact them. I have a really big butcher block cutting board, it's a sink cut out. That's also a good way to get a piece of marble, contact the guys who cut marble countertops and see if they have any leftover pieces from jobs.
I have had the IKEA 'Lagan' for several years and it's very good. It has warped a little, so I put a non slip pad underneath it. Flip it over regularly and use both sides. It's a great alternative to having a butcherblock countertop.
I have the big IKEA one too, and like it. It was very, very affordable, from what I remember. It has held up well over the last two years, even though I don't treat it particularly well.
I have had the cutting board that is pictured for about 30 years and I love it. I keep one side just for pastry/bread making and the other side for all other cooking duties. It is wotth every penny you might spend on it. Because of the lip, it won't slide around your countertop. Which ever one you get, remember to give it lots of TLC with good cleaning and oiling and it will last a lifetime.
IKEA also has LAMPLIG for $10, which is what I remember buying, and it's fabulous! It might be smaller than the one listed above, but it took up a big chunk of my counter and worked perfectly for everything I needed it.

I've also had the IKEA one and loved it. It comes completely untreated so if you want it to last longer you can oil/sand it (you can find instructions online), but I never bothered. It's so cheap that I was OK with letting it get beat up and buying a second one after about 5 years. Unfortunately I placed the new one on the counter above my dishwasher, and apparently there was so much steam coming off of it that it warped the board very quickly. So if you get one, don't do that. I'll probably buy a new one soon though...
A big fat THANK YOU! for that board from Overstock! Been looking for one like that for quite some time, and will order this tonight!
One consideration is that some pastry boards are not the type pf hardwood used in cutting boards. I have one that is WAY too soft to be a cutting board, which I found out the hard way when slicing into a loaf of bread.
Thank you all so much! I thought about checking IKEA but I am not one of those who enjoys going to their stores. For that price, however, I think I could suck it up and deal.
I have this Proteak baord and think it is pretty great.

Fine grit sand paper and a few coats of tung oil will turn the ikea countertop into the cutting board of your dreams. :) here is some information on food-safe finishes... http://www.finewoodworking.com/SkillsAndTechniques/SkillsAndTechniquesArticle.aspx?id=26893
Always have liked this one

at 9.99 it can't be beat. Oil regularly, make sure to flip it occasionally. LOVE!
Boos boards are the classics that we've always used in kitchens I've worked in, and they're about the same price as that one on Overstock. They're sturdy, and really well made. Here's a link: http://www.amazon.com/John-Boos-RA03-Reversible-Cutting/dp/B00063QBDQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1330482139&sr=8-1
Our cutting board came from our local restaurant supply store. It is 18" x 30" and a solid 1 1/2" thick. We paid about $64. But I managed to find the exact same board here: http://www.webstaurantstore.com/18-x-30-wood-cutting-board/40711830.html
A few years ago I bought a board like the one in the picture for less than $40 from Zabar's in New York City. I don't know the maker or if the store still carries them, but I remember being floored at the time by what a good deal it was. I can't find it on their website, but maybe you could give them a call?
My friends have that LAMPLIG board from Ikea and the thing is great! I definitely recommend it, and you can't beat that price!
This is a little smaller but it's fantastic (I have it)

a lot of their boards are Catskill boards (they don't say that on the site)
Another vote for the restaurant supply option here. I use Ace Mart and Mission RS and have had great success with both. I love a thick, heavy board (I have a Boos) but if you opt for a thinner board, you can get the size you want and stay closer to your budget.
I find thinner boards sometimes slide around the counter as you're working. Place a damp bar towel under the board to alleviate that.
Rachele,
If you're still looking for a cutting board, I'd be glad to make you one. Woodworking is a hobby (more like an addiction) of mine, and I'm trying to get some business apart from my day job. Let me know if you're interested!

Check Marshalls, TJMaxx/HomeGoods & Costco for great deals on cutting boards as well. World Market has some nice sized ones as well; but, some of them are only available online.
