Q: My mom got me a blender for Christmas. Awesome, right? I totally wanted one, and it's what I asked for. But there it sits in its box... unused.
I'm not sure what to make with it! I know smoothies are the obvious answer, and yes, that will be a great thing for me and my husband to have for breakfast since we commute. But what else can I use it for? Can you recommend any recipes other than smoothies for me to make with my brand new appliance??

Editor: Alison, congrats on your new blender! This question reminds me of another question we had during Soup Week:
• I Have a New Immersion Blender! How Should I Use It?
Read through the comments there; they will probably give you some good ideas! And yes, I would definitely recommend soup. Perhaps this creamy leek and yogurt soup?
Readers, help Alison out — how should she break in her new blender?

Margaritas!
Carrot soup.
Salad dressings; they emulsify well in a blender.

Using a blender (instead of food processor) is the secret to getting perfectly smooth homemade hummus.
Gazpacho
Just made this dessert last night - using only a blender and a small saucepan. Super yummy and simple!!

I highly second margaritas!
Crepe batter! And I don't recommend hummus unless you want to put in a ton of liquid. Impossible to get out without leaving half of it in the blades unless it's really liquidy, and I prefer my hummus thick.
jrossi, I'm with you... I've never had a problem getting perfectly smooth hummus in my food processor.
I do, sadly, use my blender almost exclusively for smoothies, salad dressings and "raw" chocolate syrup (raw cocoa and agave nectar -- for the raw banana "ice cream" I make in the food processor).
i've only ever (successfully) made smoothies, margaritas and pureed soups in my blender. i tried hummous, it was a disaster. so was pesto. as jrossi said, you need far too much liquid to get it going and once it's done, you can never get it all out.
this is why i covet a food processor: hummous & pesto.
I made this lemon thyme cake last night.... in the blender!
Enjoy your new trinket!

fresh tomato sauce
Plain yogurt + fresh fruit = your own fruit-flavored yogurt without all the added sugar. Also soups and fresh fruit cocktails (strain out the pulp after you blend, unless you're adding ice!).
my mom used to mix crepe batter in the blender since we didn't have a mixer at the time. awesome!
Pesto in the blender is my go-to. I have a food processor these days, but I still prefer the blender for pesto. Otherwise, I love the olive oil chocolate mousse from thekitchn: http://www.thekitchn.com/thekitchn/dessert/recipe-chocolate-mousse-with-olive-oil-and-sea-salt-093146

Sarah Kate's Spicy Boozy Chocolate Mousse is also amazing! http://www.thekitchn.com/thekitchn/dessert/recipe-spicy-boozey-mousse-041125
I use an immersion blender for hummus, and it works great, and this is for a thick hummus, not a pourable one.
My immersion blender is a bamix, but I've also used cheaper ones, and they work fine too.
I prefer it to a food processor because it is so much easier to clean (no dishwasher). Just give at a quick whir in a pitcher of dishwater right after using it.
Last summer I discovered Brazilian lemonade...delicious!

Our new blender doubles as a coffee grinder! It works so well, and that's just one less small appliance to keep in our tiny kitchen.
CREPES!

milkshakes
popover batter - makes the best popovers, for those weekend breakfasts or some people have them as a side for a steak dinner.
enchilada sauce!
Cashew cream!
This is the only way I'll eat tofu, but it's Good Eats Moo-less Chocolate Pie. Delish!

I know what you are saying... lovely to have but how often do you make smoothies, honestly... I use ours for pancake mixture, making quick breadcrumbs, iced coffee and concealing any number of vegetables in soup!!! I wrote a post on our blender: http://www.se7en.org.za/2009/07/05/saturday-spot-dont-judge-a-blender-by-its-color
Somehow when we moved in together (from our parents house, so, completely bereft of any kitchen anything) we ended up with a blender first - before any other countertop-sized appliances. Don't ask me why, I'm not sure.
We've ended up using our in lieu of a food processor, hand mixer, clean bowl, or storage container many a time. Then we bought a hand mixer and life got a few less cuts, but more pancakes ("darn").
I really like mine for sauces.
Also an easy way to clean up is to put some water and dish soap into the blender and pulse a little. It gets all of the gunk off the blade and you don't have to take it apart!
A simple smoothie is what I like to do.
Raw spinach
OJ
Banana
A bit of flax seed
Ice
Great way to add raw greens to your diet. I go through a 5 lb bag of spinach a week.
Sauces - like peanut sauce for spring rolls; any kind of pasta sauce.
Two of my favorite-ever soup recipes call for a blender:
smokey sweet potato soup
curried parsnip and coconut milk soup
Use it to blend cooked butternut squash and boiling water together to make a "stock" for butternut squash risotto!
I second the salad dressing suggestion. Once you start making it fresh you will NEVER buy bottled again.
A good one is made with a few tablespoons of tahini, some chopped fresh dill, squeeze of lemon, vinegar, olive oil, S&P.
Another yummy one is 2 tbp. each soy sauce, rice vinegar and water with a dash of sesame oil, some fresh grated ginger and pinch of pepper. You could also add carrot to make carrot-ginger dressing.
My last suggestion is my favorite: a few tsp. each olive oil and vinegar, 1/2 an avocado, 1 tsp. grated horseradish, 1/4 cup each raw cashews & water. Season to taste with S&P. Tastes just like blue cheese dressing.
While I too use my blender for smoothies more than anything else. My blender does have quite a history. I ran out of powdered sugar Christmas eve (that means, i ran out about 5 minutes AFTER everything closed) and i successfully powdered my own sugar for my peppermint patty filling (which was also completely made in the blender as well). I also use a blender to make paper. Had to add my interesting blender uses : )
late to this party but I had a similar experience with my blender.
I just started using it for random things--most of which are in the suggestions, any pourable batters, etc..
Once I used it a bit more, I saw so many more places to use it, and now it's in constant use.
