Q: My husband created an awesome zombie game for the iPhone and iPad, and so I think for his boozy birthday brunch I'd like to incorporate at least a couple of zombie elements.
Any ideas for zombie brunch?

Editor: Amanda, well we think this cute ghost cake should definitely be on the menu — it's not quite zombie-fied, but it's definitely in the spirit of things!

While the ghost cake is cute, you are right, definitely not for a zombie theme. I like these brain cupcakes :) My husband is a huge zombie fanatic and gamer so maybe he will find your husbands game!

If you guys are fans of "Zombieland," you can do stuff with Twinkies! A friend of mine made twinkie sushi for the Z-land movie night....
For the same event, I made a pasta salad using green/spinach pasta and red tomato-based sauce, so it came out looking a lot like greyish brains. A few strips of pepperoni and some sun-dried tomatoes didn't hurt, either!
The five-year-old in attendance said "Hey these brain noodles are good!" so I count it as a success.
What is the game?
Don't peeled grapes usually stand in for eyeballs? You could serve bowls of those. Also, the latest Martha Stewart Halloween special has a recipe for soft pretzel "fingers" with almond fingernails. Oh, and anything graveyard-themed, like tombstone-shaped cookies.
I saw this punch and thought it would be super fun, boozy, and zombie themed for a big group!

one of my favorite bloggers made char siu bao (pork buns) into BRAINS. zombies eat brains. and dim sum is classic brunch.

The real challenge is making creepy things that still taste good and aren't so terrifying that no one will try them.
Here are some ideas:
1. Eyeballs are the easiest and can be sweet or savory
- Evil Mad Scientist has a recipe for eyeball caprese with mozzerella and olives
http://www.evilmadscientist.com/article.php/caprese
- Take canned lychees, add a little red jam and stuff with a single blueberry to get a pretty convincing eyeball.
2. A hand reaching out of a crushed oreo cake (or cupcakes) is easy to do if you use a plastic prop. Or you could go the tougher route and use marzipan or the finger cookie recipes abundant online.
3. Drinks
- Classic tiki zombie drink http://www.drinksmixer.com/cat/3236/
- Gummy worm jello shots (self explanatory and easy to make)
- Classic Brain Hemmorage: A little grenadine in the bottom of a glass, with triple sec and baileys floated on top.
4. Flayed skin cheeseball http://dabbled.org/2008/09/halloween-food-flayed-skin-cheeseball.html
5. Props: ThinkGeek sells brain ice cube molds if you want to go a more subtle route.
Fun!
I just came across this brain jello mold at neatorama. Maybe more "brunchy" things than jello could be molded in it? Like chevre with paprika and herbs sprinkled on it.

If you wanted to cure the impending apocalypse, you could have test tubes or beakers of drinks/sauces.
Fun party idea!
Hey,
I don't know, if this link was already posted but I pretty much liked these (The page Cakewrecks.com is nice to follow anyway). Scroll a little down and you'll find not only one but two different Zombie Wedding Cakes!!! :) I liked the lower one better. Of course it's a wedding cake, but I think for an inspiration it'll help anyway. I liked the with chainsaws fighting couple! :)
Sorry, forgot to post the link!

Family Fun magazine had some cute ideas.

Thank you for all of the suggestions! Definitely doing some (maybe most) of these!!! Brain molds, yes! Caprese eyeballs, yes! Cupcakes, yes!
For those who asked what the game is, it's called Brainarang (you are a brain and you kill zombies with a boomerang). It's for the iPhone, but I play it on my iPad (big update coming soon)! Sorry, this wasn't a lame attempt at a plug, but since people asked... :-)
Not sure how much pranking goes on in your group of friends, but working off the popular theory that Zombie-ism is the result of a viraal infection, you could make a batch of for example, cookies or something, and make one of them super sour/bitter/not-quite-right and you've got your first victim of the zombie-pocolypse.
Maybe if you get a sour one you have to do a horror-themed shot or get tp'ed.
We threw a zombie party a year ago and these were the biggest hits:
-Turn a watermelon into a brain! It's super easy with a pumpkin carving knife and everyone will be impressed. Stab a big knife into it for a final effect (and so it can be cut up and served). Here's a tutorial: http://www.instructables.com/id/Halloween-Melon-Brain/
-Get some rubber surgical type gloves, wash them, then fill with water, tie off, and freeze. Once they are ice, put them in a punch bowl for a super easy creepy look.
-mozzarella ball & olive eyeballs (already suggested above) - delicious and gross! http://www.divinedinnerparty.com/halloween-finger-foods.html
-Put dried cranberries in a bowl with a sign that says "dried scabs." This was the easiest thing we did, and we were surprised to find that our guests didn't even recognize them once they read the sign!
-We took several yards of fabric and painted words of warning on it--"the end is nigh" "turn back now" "Remove the heads" and so on. We used as many different types of handwriting & colors as we could muster so it looked like lots of people had stopped to write there. We splattered it with red paint, let it dry a couple of days, and hung it on our wall. It was the terrifying centerpiece of our whole party, and a great backdrop for photos. Definitely worth the effort.
Hope you have a great party!
